I generally, don’t go in for GIFs, it’s just not an art form that I appreciate as much as others. It’s probably because I associate them with spinning coins and other tacky clip art used in the early days of the internet. But the humble and fascinating GIF turned 25 this week and The Daily Dot has a nice rundown of all the .GIF can be, including this gem from Clay Rodery, who says of GIFs:
GIFs are an opportunity to make little films, tiny narratives. There’s much more attention given to the content of the image because there’s no possibility for sound. Something has to somehow compensate for that, so I suppose that’s why people tend to make such extreme images.
