  • tim burton’s (original) frankenweenie

Before it was a major animated motion picture from Walt Disney, Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” was a live-action short from Walt Disney. Below is part I and II.

  • The film stars a few of Burton’s favorite people, including Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”) as Elsa van Helsing, Victor’s somber classmate — who is mysteriously missing from the trailer — and Catherine O’Hara (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”) as Susan Frankenstein, Victor’s Mom. Shockingly, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are nowhere to be heard in the black and white, stop-motion film.

  • What Does Your Favorite Wes Anderson Movie Say About You (Via the Atlantic)

Yep, they pretty much nailed it for me:

Bottle Rocket (1996): You are a man of a certain age. You may have dated Jen. You enjoy pot smoking, boozing, and hanging out on your eclectically designed (velvet, round, sporadically cushioned) couch. You wouldn’t call yourself a hipster, exactly, but you enjoy things that are not of the mainstream, things that you can presume to have discovered yourself and kept as your own special private secrets and used to impress the girls or boys (but probably mostly girls) you invite over to watch movies on your strange couch. Occasionally you are permeated with a sense of melancholy, but you shake it off, you shake it off, man. You love the Wilsons in equal measures. The buddy movie will forever hold you in its thrall. And why shouldn’t it? (You will never grow up.) You’re totally a dog guy. Cats, whoa, they freak you out. Unless you’re stoned.

Film Noir classic and Best British Film of the 20th Century The Third Man is now available online, for free in its entirety. Open Culture has the details and the film can be viewed here on YouTube. If you’re into this sort of thing, please do check out Open Culture’s collection of free Noir films. It won’t disappoint.

Google has a new project: Think Quarterly is a quarterly web-based magazine, beautifully designed and expertly written out of the UK. The first issue is dedicated to data (something Google knows a bit about). The Think Quarterly site describes the project this way:

“In a world of accelerating change, we all need time to reflect. Think Quarterly is a breathing space in a busy world. It’s a place to take time out and consider what’s happening and why it matters.”

Speaking of Google, SEOBook and ByJess.net have an excellent infographic out on the history of the Google Algorithm and how it has changed and shaped the web — not always for the better.

  • Fight for Your Right Revisited is a parade of stars

Adam Yauch’s short film Fight for Your Right Revisited has a crap-load of stars ranging from Jack Black to Stanley Tucci and everyone in between. My favorite listing here though is Clint Caluory as Zach Galifianakis as George Drakoulias.

What in the hell does that mean?

Whatever it means, it should be fun…

    (Hat-tip to Pitchfork.)

Actually, not so much and this video proves it. (Hat-tip @jamesconnell) Unfortunately, there’s no embed, but you should definitely check it out. The freestyle clips around DC are especially fun. As an East Coaster it’s nice to see a video and be able to say, “Oh shit, I’ve skied that.”
